Need and Challenges:
State of California honored Dorsa Elementary School
in San Jose as a "Distinguished School." Located in
the Alum Rock School District, over 80% of the school's
students come from Spanish-speaking homes. In addition
to the outstanding work of the students and teachers,
many attribute the school's success to their on-site
homework center. It enabled students to be tutored
on various subjects in Spanish and English languages.
This contrasts with the English-only classroom instruction
required by the State of California.
Unfortunately, space
needs of the school required that the homework center
be closed down and converted into a classroom. Alarmed
by this situation, a teacher contacted corporations
to request financial support to build a new homework
center. Cadence Design Systems came to the rescue.
Role
of Underwood & Rosenblum, Inc.:
Cadence leadership turned to U&R to plan and manage
the entire construction project. This was because
U&R brings expertise in civil engineering and surveying
for schools and other medium-sized projects. Our firm
had also been working with Cadence and the school
district on other projects. To be finished before
the start of the next school year, U&R completed the
entire project from beginning to end within a record
